B3Living is a mature (2006) LSVT association based in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, owning over 4,600 homes and providing homes for over 9,000 people across Hertfordshire and Essex. We employ 175 people and for the previous 6 years we have appeared in the Sunday Times Top 100 best not-for-profit organisations to work for. Our turnover is £26.5m, our operating surplus is £11.5m and our operating margin is 43.3%. We are well governed, financially sound and offer good value and services to our residents We have a V1 rating for validity and G1 rating for governance from the Homes and Communities Agency as well as a BAA1 Moody’s rating.

We are committed to addressing the acute shortage of affordable homes in our locality through providing a range of sustainable places to live to those who cannot afford the market, ensuring that we help create cohesive communities through supporting our residents.

We have a strong and ambitious development programme, with plans to build over 700 homes over the next 6 years, widening the area we work in to include homes outside Broxbourne. We have also set up two new group subsidiaries. Our Development Company was operational from February and will be mainly for rented and shared ownership. Everlea Homes will produce private rented homes with any profits being gift-aided back to B3Living.

B3Living is currently reviewing its purpose. Rather than being an average performer at a wide range of things, we want to narrow our focus to become exceptional at a few carefully chosen areas and become a beacon and thought leader for the sector. We are small enough to be agile and flexible and we have a Board that has the appetite to be different, and a team that have the potential to deliver this.

We want to identify specific products to holistically improve housing in our area of operation based on a very thorough understanding of the demographic and socio-economic data and trends, whilst ensuring the properties can be built in a flexible way to enable change of use should that need change. We are also considering a detailed understanding of the housing market and local stock condition.

We are also looking at innovative ways to intervene in the housing market and offer options that don’t involve individuals spending the bulk of their income on housing costs.

About the role

The B3Living Board has eight members and meets ten times a year as well as two away days that sometimes take place on Saturdays and/or have an overnight stay. Board Members will also be expected to sit on other B3Living boards and committees, including Audit and Risk and our Development and Private Property companies. There are likely to be other time commitments including training and development, recruitment and internal meetings, as well as the time required to review documents. The length of appointment is a maximum of nine years with three terms of three years.

About candidates

Our Board are looking for two people to join them in motivating, inspiring and leading the team to new ways of thinking about what we do and how we do it.  We want to be creative and resilient in how we consider solutions to seemingly difficult issues and tenacious in pursuing new opportunities. We are looking for dynamic leaders who understand the importance of change in organisations and like working at pace.

Governance, risk and/or non-executive experience is important, as is experience of operating in a similar complex business operating environment. We are particularly looking to address a shortage of experience of large regeneration projects and planning experience. We would also welcome experience of financial strategy, planning and management, ICT strategy and systems, customer services, health and safety and change management/organisational development.

We believe having a diverse Board is vital to our ongoing success and we particularly welcome applications from underrepresented groups.


The closing date is 21st May, the first stage interviews will be held on 5 June and the final stage interviews will take place on 26th June.
