Altair hosted an informal networking event for small housing associations on 8th December. The event focussed on the implications of recent government policy for the sector and potential options for the future including mergers.
The event was well attended by directors and board members from small housing associations across London as well as officials from the GLA.
Julian Ashby, Chair of the HCA’s Regulation committee and Stephen Bull, Head of Governance from the National Housing Federation, were the keynote speakers.
It was noted that rent cuts are helping the sector to focus on driving out inefficiencies which is crucial as the future for housing associations post 2020 currently remains uncertain. Further adverse policy changes will make it difficult for some providers to cope.
Smaller housing associations were urged to identify their unique selling point and to think carefully about how they plan to protect tenants. The soon to be published merger code would provide housing associations with a useful guide on how to approach this issue.
The speeches were followed by a lively and thought provoking Q and A session.
During the evening Altair also highlighted the range of bespoke services it offers smaller housing associations including development, finance, HR, governance and recruitment.
