The NHF has published the National Housing Federation Code of Governance 2020 in draft for consultation. Our team of governance specialists have reviewed the draft Code against our initial open consultation response which incorporated our experience of working and advising on various governance codes, including the Charities Code, the UK Corporate Code, the UK Sports Code and Community Housing Cymru’s Code of Governance, within housing and other sectors. They have made a series of suggestions for how the Code could better promote good governance in the sector which can be viewed via the link below.
The key themes throughout these suggestions for improvement are:
- Greater emphasis of equality and diversity – understanding its purpose and how and why it should be achieved.
- Increased resident voice – understanding of how to truly achieve resident focus and responsibility at board to represent.
- Importance of board and organisational culture – understanding of the line of sight between the board to teams, and how employee views will be heard and influence decision making.
Overall, our governance team would like to see the code strengthened in areas to promote a better governing standard for all varied organisations who signed up to the code, to ensure it is not simply a box ticking exercise.
