This week, we are proud to support Gas Safety Week 2026, the Gas Safe Register’s annual campaign bringing organisations across the country together with one common goal, keeping the nation gas safe.

Gas Safety Week is an important reminder that gas safety must never be taken for granted. As we prepare for the colder months, when boilers and heating systems come under greater demand, housing providers have a vital role in ensuring homes remain safe and residents are protected.

Unsafe, poorly maintained or incorrectly installed gas appliances can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, gas leaks, fires and explosions. Recent enforcement activity also reinforces the importance of ensuring that gas work is only undertaken by appropriately qualified and Gas Safe registered engineers.

For social housing providers, this responsibility is reinforced by the Regulator of Social Housing’s Safety and Quality Standard, which requires registered providers to identify and meet all legal health and safety requirements and ensure actions arising from legally required health and safety assessments are completed within appropriate timescales.

The Regulator’s 2026 Regulatory Casework Review also provides a timely reminder that landlords must be able to demonstrate that they know their homes are safe. This means having complete and accurate data, robust assurance over the quality of health and safety information, effective systems for tracking remedial actions and clear reporting that enables Boards and councillors to provide appropriate oversight and challenge.

For housing providers, effective gas safety therefore goes far beyond completing the annual check. It requires strong assurance that:

  • 100% compliance is maintained, with effective arrangements for properties where access is difficult.
  • Gas safety records are complete, accurate and readily accessible.
  • Contractors and engineers remain appropriately qualified, competent and Gas Safe registered for the work they undertake.
  • Overdue, failed or incomplete inspections are identified, risk assessed and escalated quickly.
  • Repairs and remedial actions arising from inspections are tracked through to completion.
  • Carbon monoxide risks are effectively managed and residents understand the warning signs.
  • Gas safety data held across housing, compliance and contractor systems is reconciled and independently validated.
  • Boards and senior leaders receive clear and accurate assurance on compliance, exceptions, risks, overdue actions and emerging trends.
  • Residents receive clear and accessible information about gas safety, appointments and how to report concerns.

For Boards, the critical question should not simply be “Are we 100% compliant?” but “What evidence gives us confidence that the 100% figure is complete, accurate and demonstrates that every home and every resident is safe?”

At Altair, we help housing organisations move beyond simply reporting compliance percentages to understanding the quality and integrity of the data and assurance behind them.

Our independent data and compliance reviews can identify inconsistencies, duplicate or missing records, overdue actions, weaknesses in processes and areas of strong practice. We help organisations strengthen their controls, improve compliance reporting and provide greater assurance to Boards, residents, auditors and the Regulator of Social Housing.

Gas safety is not just about achieving a compliance figure – it is about being able to evidence that every home and every resident is being kept safe.
