Chair and Board Members, Ekaya Housing Association

About the role

Ekaya is a not-for-profit organisation with over 30 years of experience providing housing and support services to predominately BME women and their families in South London. Our portfolio includes the provision of high-quality support to teenage mothers and their babies and care leavers, as well as our award winning 60-plus children’s community nursery in Tulse Hill, Lambeth.

Based in Brixton, South London, we own and manage c. 450 homes, employ just under 45 staff and had a turnover of £4.6m in 2020. We have achieved Gold Investors in People Accreditation and our nursery is rated “good” by Ofsted.

Ekaya has an ambitious growth programme including a mixture of new developments, stock transfers and acquisitions. We will also develop our services to include supporting young parents and encouraging them to reach their potential, whether through finding jobs, internships or taking up further educational opportunities.

Our Chair and some of our Board Members’ terms of office are due to expire over the next six months. We are therefore looking for at least four inspirational individuals with a broad range of skills to help shape our growing business and further develop our community focus.

Knowledge of the social housing sector is not necessary for either the Chair or Board Member role. Non-executive experience is not required for all Board Members as a full induction programme will be provided. Ideally, we anticipate our new Chair designate joining the Board as soon as possible to allow time for induction. Board Members can join from August 2021 onwards.

The expected minimum time commitment will be an average of two to three days per month for the Chair and at least 30 hours per annum for Board Members. Remuneration for the Chair is currently £4,560 per annum plus reasonable expenses.

Board Members are not remunerated but in return, they will receive comprehensive training and support to learn new skills and mix with interesting people who have a range of knowledge and experience to share. More importantly, our Board Members will make a real difference to our single-parent, predominantly BME families and, by extension, our local community. Reasonable expenses are also paid to Board members.
