Independent Committee Member

Independent Committee Member (Care and Support Committee and also the Group Audit Committee), The Riverside Group £3,250 per annum for undertaking both roles plus reasonable expenses

About the role

About The Riverside Group
With over 100,000 customers and almost 60,000 homes under its management across England and Scotland, The Riverside Group (“Riverside”) is one of the country’s largest housing associations. Operating in 160 local authorities, Riverside is also committed to delivering care and support services all around the country and is investing in the building of 20,000 new homes over the next 10 years. We are recognised sector leaders with regards to the quality of our governance and the financial stability of our organisation. We are rated G1:V1 by the Regulator for Social Housing and A1 by Moodys.

We are particularly proud of our care and support offer, providing homes and services to some of the country’s most marginalised people, including those who are homeless, women fleeing domestic violence, and individuals with learning disabilities. Our specialist housing for older people ranges from more traditional sheltered housing to nearly 700 state-of-the-art extra care apartments. We are also at the heart of solving the homelessness crisis and engaged in Housing First activity alongside hostels, floating support and extra-care.

Our boards and committees are key to the success of Riverside. They not only provide strategic direction and guidance but also ensure that we continue to be a well-run organisation and that we are delivering high standards of service and care to our customers. Membership of the Care and Support Committee comprises representatives of our Group and subsidiary boards, our customers, our Executive Team and Independent Committee Members. This Committee plays a crucial role in our governance structure, reporting directly to the Group Board with responsibility for oversight and scrutiny of the services that we provide to our customers, ensuring that these are well-managed and that they deliver value for money.

About the role
We are recruiting a new committee member to join our Care and Support Committee. The successful candidate will also serve as a member of Riverside’s Group Audit Committee, providing a valuable link between these two key Committees.

We are looking for someone who has leadership experience of landlord services and building safety compliance and an interest in care and support. Non-executive experience is not essential but an understanding of the principles of good governance, managing risk and the role of an Independent Committee Member is important. Candidates will need the ability to analyse significant amounts of complex information and pull out the fundamental issues, ask pertinent questions of the executive, provide assurance to the Group Board and contribute to development days. A strong awareness of and commitment to embedding equality and diversity principles is also essential.

We are keen to ensure that our board reflects the diversity of our staff and customers and therefore we warmly welcome suitably qualified candidates from underrepresented groups, specifically young people, BAME, disabled and LGBTQ candidates. This role may also be of particular interest to people with lived experience of some of the care and support services that we offer.

Meetings are currently held via video conference due to COVID-19 restrictions and it is expected that moving forward some proportion of meetings will remain remote, while others will involve travel to Care and Support sites across the country or at Riverside’s Head Office in Speke, Liverpool.
